My New Adventure
I am delighted to be starting this new journey writing articles (if my words ever make sense) with the scoops.ie. When I was initially approached by BOD! (Brian O’Donoghue now, not Brian O’ Driscoll) to be honest I was quite honoured. I never thought of myself as being a ‘columnist’ but this is quite exciting for me and I am looking forward to sharing my views with you all and vice versa.
A little bit about me
My name is Kate Nolan; I am 22 years old and come from Myshall!
I am currently studying Comparative Criminology and Criminal Justice. It is a mouthful, I know, but it is quite interesting. I won’t go into too much detail at the moment, but briefly it is studying and understanding the various reasons why people commit crime which is the Criminology side of things. The ‘Criminal Justice’ bit is covering the criminal justice system that is currently in operation in Ireland and in other countries, hence the ‘Comparative’. So if you find yourself causing havoc on a Saturday night after the foundry, I can tell you exactly what law you have broken! I recently graduated from my degree last November, in Community and Youth Work. That is a small bit more complicated to explain so maybe in the future I could dedicate an article to that specifically, as it was a huge eye opening experience for me and thought me a lot about myself and the world!
Sport is a huge part of my life and I have a true passion for it. Camogie is my main interest. I play with my club team Myshall, County level with Carlow and my College Maynooth University. I am lucky to be playing with three great teams, which have allowed me to play against, with and under some of the best players in the country. I love the success that comes with sport but I love the social aspect also. That said I do enjoy all types of sports. Other than sports, I love reading and going on walks with my dogs. When I get to go out, I love Carlow on a bank holiday weekend. You will, more than likely, find me on the dance floor of the Tower, dancing and singing like there is no one watching!
I have huge interest in human rights and particular women’s rights. I always have had an interest in women’s issues but only came to fully understand them when I began college and now I am more aware of them than ever. I’m constantly giving out about the coverage, or lack of, that women get in all areas of life especially in sport, which is a prime example of that. In future articles I hope to give coverage to women in sport and give my opinion on certain things that annoy and inspire me in relation to this. However, I will be using this as a platform to talk about a number of things that interest me, which could basically be everything and anything.
I am going to finish now, before I bore you anymore and also the exercise bike is calling me!!!! That is a brief overview of who I am. It’s short I know, but let me know if you would like me to explain anything in more detail. I am really excited yet very very anxious as this is my first time to undertake anything like this, so all support is welcome!
Thanks for taking the time to read my article and if there is anything you would like me to write about in the future do not be afraid to contact me on Facebook or firstname.lastname@example.org.
